A New shape. A New Outlook.
Liposuction, or body contouring, is the removal
of unwanted body fat using specialized surgical
equipment. Liposuction is useful for
contouring the, abdomen, hips,
thighs, back, upper arms, buttocks,
knees, neck, chin, calves, and
ankles. By removing unwanted
fat,
liposuction smoothes body
shape
and improves appearance.
Liposuction can be performed in a
physician’s office, outpatient surgery center,
or hospital. Generally a patient having a smaller
amount of fat removed will go home the same day of surgery, however larger volumes of fat removal, or when done in combination with other procedures may require hospitalization or overnight care.
In the procedure itself, the physician makes a small cut in the skin and inserts a small instrument for fluid injection. The fluid often includes a salt solution called saline, epinephrine which contracts the blood vessels and a local anesthetic called Lidocaine to aid in easier removal of the fat. After the solution is injected the physician uses another small instrument called an aspiration cannula to remove fat from under the skin using suction.
Although liposuction is generally considered safe, it is a surgical procedure and has the potential for rare, but serious complications. If you are considering liposuction, you should discuss both the benefits and potential risks of the procedure with your physician before making a decision.
When choosing liposuction, it is important to have realistic expectations about what the procedure can and cannot do. Liposuction can enhance appearance and improve self-confidence, but it won’t necessarily change your life or cause other people to treat you differently. Be sure to discuss your expectations for surgery with your physician before deciding to have a liposuction procedure.
